Construction has officially begun on the Brent Spence Bridge Corridor Project, a major $4.05 billion infrastructure initiative connecting Ohio and Kentucky across the Ohio River. The project includes a new cable-stayed companion bridge, reconstruction of key interstate interchanges, and modernization of one of the busiest freight corridors in the United States.
The new bridge will carry through traffic on Interstate 71 and Interstate 75, while the existing Brent Spence Bridge will be redesigned to serve local traffic. In addition, more than 40 overpasses and underpasses will be rebuilt, alongside significant roadway, drainage, and safety improvements throughout the corridor.
The Walsh Kokosing Design-Build Team is leading construction, with foundation work, utility relocation, and site preparation already underway. The project is expected to create approximately 6 million labor hours and provide jobs for over 700 skilled workers during peak construction periods.
With more than $1 billion worth of freight moving through the corridor every day, the project is expected to significantly reduce congestion, improve transportation efficiency, and strengthen supply chain reliability. The new companion bridge is scheduled to open in 2031, with major corridor improvements continuing through 2033.
